Natural rubies valued by WM Gold Exchange

A fine natural ruby is one of the rarest things in the jewellery world, and the market for them in South Africa is strong. If you have rubies — loose, in a ring, or in an older piece that's been sitting in a drawer — we'd love to take a look. Photos over WhatsApp are all we need to start, and there's never any pressure to sell.

What we look at

With rubies, the depth and purity of the red colour drives the price more than anything else — stones approaching a vivid 'pigeon's blood' red command the strongest offers. We also assess clarity, cut, carat weight, and whether the stone shows signs of heat treatment. Untreated rubies carry a premium, but treated stones are still very much worth selling.

Questions we are asked about rubies

How do I know if my ruby is real?

You don't need to — that's our job. We test every stone in front of you and explain exactly what we're seeing before we make any offer.

Do you buy small rubies from broken jewellery?

Yes. Melee rubies and stones from broken or incomplete pieces still carry value, especially alongside the gold they're set in.
