How the price is worked out
Three things decide your offer: the international gold price on the day, the purity (carat) of each item, and its weight in grams. We scan and test every piece so the carat is confirmed, not guessed, and weigh it on a calibrated scale in front of you.
A simple way to think about it: a 9ct chain is 37.5% gold, so 10 grams of 9ct contains roughly 3.75 grams of pure gold. An 18ct chain of the same weight contains double that. That is why two chains that look identical can be worth very different amounts.
| Carat | Purity | Share of pure gold |
|---|---|---|
| 24ct | 99.9% pure | 100% |
| 22ct | 91.6% pure | 91.6% |
| 18ct | 75.0% pure | 75.0% |
| 14ct | 58.5% pure | 58.5% |
| 9ct | 37.5% pure | 37.5% |
Krugerrands and other bullion coins are quoted separately, against the live coin market rather than scrap weight.
