Look for a stamp
Most real gold is stamped with its purity. Look inside rings and on clasps for marks like 9ct, 375, 14k, 585, 18ct or 750. Marks like GP, GF or HGE usually mean gold plated or gold filled.
Quick home checks
- Magnet: real gold is not magnetic. If it sticks strongly, it is likely not solid gold.
- Colour wear: if another metal shows through where it rubs, it is probably plated.
- Skin marks: green or black marks on your skin can point to plated jewellery.
