What 9ct gold is

9ct means 9 parts out of 24 are pure gold, and the rest is other metals that make it harder and change its colour. It is the most common carat in South African jewellery because it is hard wearing and affordable.

A lot of older 9ct jewellery is still worth selling, especially heavier chains and bracelets.

What you will actually be offered

No buyer pays the full refinery rate for jewellery, because melting, refining and testing all cost money, and some pieces turn out to be lower than their stamp. A fair offer is below the refinery rate, and an honest buyer will show you how they worked it out.

We test and weigh every piece in front of you and explain our offer line by line. Read our full guide to the gold price per gram to see exactly how we work out an offer.

How to estimate your own gold

Find the stamp (it may read 9ct, 9K or 375). Weigh the piece on a kitchen scale in grams. Multiply the weight by the rate above. That gives you the refinery value, the ceiling of what the gold is worth.

More questions

Is 9ct gold real gold?
Yes. 9ct gold contains 37.5% pure gold mixed with other metals.
Why does the 9ct price change during the day?
It follows the international gold price and the rand to dollar exchange rate, which both move constantly.
Will I get the full 9ct refinery rate if I sell?
No. Buyers pay below the refinery rate to cover refining costs and the risk that a piece is under carat. Ask any buyer to show you how they got to their number.
