Gold sovereigns have been minted for over two centuries and they turn up in South African homes constantly — inherited from grandparents, tucked into jewellery, or kept as small investments. We buy full sovereigns and half sovereigns of every monarch and era, from Victorian to modern issues, and we always check whether your coin is worth more than its gold weight.
How we value them
Every sovereign contains a known quantity of gold — a full sovereign holds 7.32 grams of pure gold, a half sovereign exactly half that — so the live gold price sets the floor for our offer. Older and scarcer dates, mint marks and better condition can add a collector's premium, and we look for that carefully. Even a sovereign mounted in a ring still carries its full gold value.

Questions we are asked about gold sovereigns
Are old sovereigns worth more than gold value?
Some are. Scarce dates and mint marks carry a premium, which is why we check each coin individually instead of weighing them in a pile.
Do you buy sovereigns set into jewellery?
Yes, all the time. The coin and the gold mount both have value, and we price the whole piece fairly.
